In 1957 the philanthropists Hunter Perry and Lillian Perry Edwards, brother and sister, bequeathed this circa 1920 Georgian Mansion, along with a substantial endowment, to provide gracious living for those who desired to live independently but not alone.
Since that time, the original home has been expanded in a most tasteful architectural manner to include many additional independent accommodations, a very large apartment complete with its own kitchen, fireplace, foyer and office/bedroom, assisted living accommodations, and The Infirmary, a nursing facility held in the highest regard by one and all.
Martha Jefferson House is a private, non-profit endeavor and as such does not accept Medicare or Medicaid reimbursements. Because everyone is private pay, from the independent residents to those in The Infirmary, the staff of Martha Jefferson House is larger per capita than most retirement facilities, thus offering the very best in care to residents, as well as to the buildings, and the lushly landscaped grounds.
Unlike many large facilities, there is no enormous capital outlay to become a resident here. After the Board of Directors reviews your portfolio to establish ability to pay, new residents pay a one time Residence Fee of $6,500.00 ($10,000 for the Perry Wing apartments). After that, the normal monthly fees apply.
